Copper is an exceptional metal, with a vast array of properties. Considered “Man’s eternal metal”, it is durable, malleable yet strong, a great thermal and electrical conductor, resistant to corrosion and biofouling, and, well, simply gorgeous.
The Ancient Greeks and Romans prized copper and copper-alloys, and were early adopters of the aesthetic value of the metal. They were used for decorative purposes: from coins and pottery, to armoury and figureheads, to the Great Colossus of Rhodes - copper was a major signifier of wealth and prosperity (in the age of wealth and prosperity). It has even been suggested that copper wine presses were used by the world’s first vintners - an association we are very much proud of.
Copper's antimicrobial properties were also recognised, and as such, copper was used to treat wounds, line aqueducts, and if one was wealthy, serve as the aristocratic drinking vessel of choice. Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognises antimicrobial copper as the only natural touch surface material capable of killing harmful and potentially deadly bacteria. Independent tests recognised copper’s ability to kill 99.9% of bacteria within two hours. It is therefore the perfect surface for CbD’s range of splash backs and designer pieces for use in public spaces, and for the family home.
Copper’s strength, flexibility, and high-demand, allow for it to be a highly regenerative and recyclable product - as well as one that retains its value. Copper is 100% recyclable, and it is estimated that 80% of all the copper ever mined is still in use today.
We at CbD are very conscious of the environmental issues facing our time, and tailor our lives and business to a low-impact, sustainable, and renewable framework. We believe the use and proliferation of copper is very much in keeping with this philosophy.
